Pawleys Island and Litchfield
With the well-appointed Litchfield By the Sea resort and Pawleys Island shabby-chic beach cottages favored by the weathly, you'll think you're shopping at Kiawah or Sea Island instead of 20 minutes from Myrtle Beach.
As For Me & My House, 11382 Ocean Highway (U.S. 17), 843-235-6525
Without a doubt the most unusual store we found, As For Me & My House features gifts from kitchen towels to hand-painted platters -- all adorned with inspirational sayings or scripture.
The store opened three years ago after Margaret Murphy, the wife of a local Episcopalian deacon, gave friends pillowcases with embroidered scripture as Christmas gifts.
"The idea was the scripture was the last thing you see at night and the first thing you see in the morning," she says. "They loved it, and encouraged me to keep going with the idea. We did home shows for several years, then opened in this building."
Vaulted ceilings, a palladian window and murals of angels around the doorway grace this Lowcountry-style shop with a welcoming front porch. Inside, the shop is worthy of a magazine layout with professionally designed displays.
Some items' sayings are reverent ("This is the day the Lord has made" or "He leads me beside quiet waters"), while others fall on the sassy side ("Hell's hot, time's short, stakes are high.")
Also worth a look -- a 2-foot-tall tabletop cross made of local oyster shells ($150).
